John Steinbeck and Self-Doubt

When we are “really under it” with self-doubt, it is easy to think that we are alone with this curse. So, when we somehow keep pressing forward, refusing to give up or give in a warm ray of sunshine finds us.

In our darkest hour we come upon a quote by another writer, but not just any writer. The quote is from one of the greats. A writer we can only dream of emulating.

John Steinbeck’s Daily Diary Quotes
I am assailed with my own ignorance and inability…Sometimes, I seem to do a good little piece of work, but when it is done it slides into mediocrity…
My work is no good, I think — I’m desperately upset about it…I’m slipping. I’ve been slipping all my life.
My word. If this master of the writing art would have surrendered to his self-doubts the world would have missed many literary masterpieces.
I am reminded of something my dear old Dad said; “sometimes you just have to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and keep moving.”
Thank You, John
